Junior Infants

Art- We made snowmen using cotton wool and coloured paper. It was snowing in Geashill.



English, Art and Drama- We read the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. We listened to the audiobook on the computer. We pretended to be the wolf and the Three Little Pigs.





History-We sequenced the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'.



Geography- Weather- We were dressed for the cold January weather. We wore coats, hats, gloves and scarves. We were Weather Forecasters, we kept a log of the weather for a week. We used Thermometers to measure the cold temperatures.




Art-'The Three Little Pigs'-we used spaghetti, lollipop sticks, and red paper to make 'The Three Little Pigs' houses.






2nd class

In Maths, we made 3D objects from recycled materials!






5th and 6th classes

In Maths we have been learning all about the circle. We know the names of the different parts of the circle and we also worked out their areas.



For Art we made some lovely circle designs using contrasting colours.



In Geography we are learning about rainfall and the water cycle. We drew graphs to show how much rain fell in December in 2013,2014 and 2015. We found out Decmber 2015 was the wettest month ever.




Dale Treadwell

Last Friday January 8th all classes took part in a nature/biodiversity workshop given by environmenatlist Dale Treadwell. All children dressed up warmly and were delighted to be out exploring. Take a look at some photos.We are working hard towards our fifth Green Flag on biodiversity. We have all been learning our Green Code. This is it;

Plants, animals, birds and insects too.
They are all safe in our Green School.

Christmas Party

Thanks to our Parents' Council for organising the children's Christmas Party. Thanks also to Santa Claus for making an appearance!

Christmas Holidays

School re-opens on Wednesday 6th January. We wish you all a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year!


Nativity Play

There was great excitement on Wednesday evening 16th December when all the classes took part in our Nativity Play in Raheen Church. A huge crowd of parents and extended family enjoyed the children acting, singing, playing bells and tin whistles as well as doing sign language while singing some Christmas songs. A big thank you to everyone who helped make the evening so enjoyable.











Bring and Buy Sale

We raised €525 in our Bring and Buy Sale. On Tuesday 15th December we were delighted to present our cheque to Jacqueline and Mary, representatives from Daingean St. Vincent de Paul. They explained to the children how the money will be put to good use locally.

We made advent wreath, Rudolphs, Christmas trees, Christmas cards and a Santa Group Display based on 'he see's you when you're sleeping.





Science-Magnets

In Science, we were investigating with magnets. Metal attracts magnets. We had fun!!



Writing

We are getting very good at our writing.





Science-Materials

We have been looking at plastics, wood, metal, paper and fabric. We went on a material hunt.



History-Toys

We have been looking at old and new toys. We asked our Mammy and Daddy what they liked to play with when they were small.



Bring and Buy Sale

We held our annual Bring and Buy sale on Friday 11th December. The children enjoyed spending their money on a variety of items. All money raised is going to St. Vincent de Paul.



New Building

Things are really taking shape in our extension. Windows and doors are in while the roof is almost complete.




Heritage Project Competition

Well done to 6th class for winning 3rd prize in the Heritage Project Competition held in Portlaoise on 3rd December. Over the last few weeks the class have put a huge amount of work into their project on Fr.Thomas Burbage. They produced a wonderful project and a very well made Powerpoint presentation.






Christmas

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around the school.





Our annual Nativity Play takes place on 16th December at 7pm in Raheen Church. We are holding our Bring and Buy sale on 11th December. Children can bring in items from Monday 7th.


U-16 A Hurling Champions Cup Visit

On Friday 27th November some players from the Na Fianna U-16 A Offaly Hurling Championship winning team visited the school. Reece Seery a past pupil of the school was very proud to show us the cup. Well done everyone!




3rd and 4th classes

3rd and 4th classes have been working on electrical circuits. They designed and made quiz boards with in-built circuits for 1st class to try.




Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Thanks to all the children and parents who filled shoe boxes. We had a great response again this year.



Cairdeas

In Drama, we have been acting out our nursery rhymes stories 'Miss Polly had a dolly' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'.



In Maths, we were learning about 2D shapes.

We made different shapes using the vertex balls and rods.




A reminder that the Parent Teacher Meetings take place on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th November. Times will be set out on Monday 12th.

5th and 6th classes

In Science, we have been learning about spiders. We want to examine them closely so we have set some traps on our school grounds to catch them. We will return them safely when we have finished looking at them.



We drew a plan of our school grounds and marked on it where our traps have been laid.




Junior Infants

In Music we had great fun learning about percussion instruments.



In Art, we made some scarecrows.




3rd and 4th classes

In Science we classified good and poor reflectors. We used periscope too.



In Maths we have been working with money. We made shopping lists from catalogues.



We made megalithis burial tombs in clay.



Building Works

Our extension is making great progress. It is almost ready for roofing.



Hallowe'en

Everyone got into the Hallowe'en spirit on Friday 23rd October. Look at all the wonderful costumes.







The staff looked better than usual!



All classes did lots of Hallowe'en work over the last week. Take a look.







Thanks to everyone who sent in such lovely buns and cakes. Thanks to all who donated to Temple St. Children's Hospital and the Corey Mulpeter fund. €140 was collected.




Presentation of Proclamation and Irish Flag by Defence Forces.

On Wednesday 21st October we were visited by Sgt. Derek McKevitt and Gunner Peter Scally from the 2nd Artillery Regiment in Athlone as well as Sgt. Seán Sweeney, parent, Board of Management member and representative of the Air Corps. They presented the school with our National Flag and a copy of the Easter Rising Proclamation. One of our pupils also read out part of the proclamation. Well done to the boys and girls for their interesting questions and the rousing rendition of Ámhrán na bhFiann. Thanks to the parents, grandparents and past pupils who attended to help us celebrate this occasion. Thanks also to the three members of the Defence Forces who carried out their duties so well.








OSPCA

On Thursday volunteers with the OSPCA visited every class reminding us how to look after our pets. We had a special visit from Minnie the dog and two lovely kittens. Thanks to all who donated pet food and money to the OSPCA. They were very impressed.





5th and 6th classes

In Maths we have been learning about gathering data and representing it on various types of graphs. We drew bar charts and trend graphs. We also created graphs on our tablets.



In Science we were learning about gravity and air resistance. We had fun carrying out an experiment to see which material made the best parachute. Our results showed a tissue paper parachute was best. However, none of us would use it to jump out of a plane!

In Art we painted our Bronze Age weapons and jewellery.



Cairdeas

The children in Cairdeas made a beautiful Autumn display.



5th and 6th classes

In History the children have been learning about the Bronze Age . For Art they made jewellery, tools and weapons from clay.




3rd and 4th classes

In Science, the children have been dissolving different substances in water.We found the saturation point of a solution. We dissolved different types of sugar in hot and cold water.



In Art we made some leaf prints.




In Maths we drew different types of graphs.




1st class

In Science, we made some butter. After making it we got to sample it on some crackers. Yum! Yum!



Senior Infant and 2nd classes

In Maths, we have completed a graph displaying the results of a survey. The survey involved us asking questions to the children in the school about their favourite subjects, colours and pets.

Junior Infants went to explore our local area in the Glebe Walk.



In Art, we made some hedgehogs using leaves.

Athletics

24 children from 3rd to 6th classes took part in the Offaly Primary Schools Cross Country Competition on Thursday 1st October. Well done to all for taking part. A special mention to our Bronze medal winner.

Tullamore to Calais Project

Geashill School, along with most other Offaly primary schools, is supporting the Tullamore to Calais project as our response to the refugee crisis developing in Europe. Children have brought in Hygiene Packs which will be shipped to Calais along with other supplies. We really appreciate your support for this most worthy cause.

Our four classroom extension is progressing well. Everyday there is something new to look at.



5th and 6th Classes

In History we have been learning about archaeology. Mr. Conneely, a former archaeologist brought in some artefacts to show the class.
