School News

School re-opens on Monday 31st August.

Celebrating our Excellent Attendance

On Thursday 26th June children with excellent school attendance were awarded with certificates. 22 children missed no days this year. 29 children missed only 1-3 days.

Goodbye and Best Wishes To Ms. Laura Cosgrove

Ms. Laura Cosgrove will not be returning to Geashill N.S next year. She will be moving to Portarlington Girls' School. Laura has been a valued member of our staff here for the last three years and she will be missed. We wish her every success in her future career.

Senior Tour

On Wednesday 25th June 3rd to 6th classes went on their tour to Dunmore Caves and Castlecomer Discovery Park. Take a look at some of the photos below.

Contract Signing

On Tuesday 23rd June the contracts were signed for our new extension between the Board of Management and Carroll O'Keeffe Building Contractors. We are all looking forward to the work beginning soon.

Sports Day

We held our Sports Day on Monday 22nd June. Great fun was had by all.

Open Day

On Wednesday 17th June we held our annual Open Day for parents, grandparents, new pupils and friends of the school. All the children performed Irish dances, music, poems and songs.

Bicycle Stands

Geashill Tidy Towns installed bicycle stands in our school yard on Monday 15th June. These early birds were the first to use them on Tuesday morning.

The stands were made using old bicycles. Thanks to all who helped make and install them.

Junior School Tour

On Friday 12th June Junior Infants to 2nd Class went to Tricky Tricksters Magic Castle in Co. Kildare. Take a look at some of these pictures and see how much fun they had.

Special Classes for Deaf Children

From now on our Special Classes will be known as Cairdeas. Cairdeas is the Irish word for friendship and we think this is a very appropriate name for these classes.

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to the boys and girls who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday 13th May.

Football Final

Tough luck to the boys on losing their final in O'Connor Park on Wednesday 13th May.

Killeigh Community Games Handwriting Competition

Well done to the boys who all won medals in the Killeigh Community Games Handwriting Competition. Seán, Cian and Finnan represented the parish in the Offaly finals in Ferbane. Seán won a broze medal.

Boys' Football

Well done to our boys' team who beat Scoil Bhríde Edenderry in tough weather conditions on Wednesday 29th April. They now have qualified for the final against Boher N.S. Date to be decided.

Planting St. Brigid's Anemones

With the valued support of Pat Foley and Geashill Tidy Towns all the children planted anemone corms on Friday May 1st. The children will bring them home in about five weeks.

Well done to the boys and girls who took part in the FAI five aside soccer competition. The girls were runners up while the boys qualified for the Mid Leinster Final.

The boys took part in the Mid Leinster Final on Wednesday 22nd April. They played well but were beaten by better teams on the day.


Wishing you all a happy and safe Easter holiday. School re-opens on Monday 13th April.

The school will be closed on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th of March.


The boys have a football match against Boher in Geashill on Wednesday 18th March at 3:30pm.
The girls are playing Clonbullogue in Geashill on Thursday 19th March at 3:30pm.

Scríobh Leabhar Awards

Congratulations to all the children who received awards for their Irish books in Portlaoise on Wednesday 11th March.


Congratulations to all in 6th class who received the sacrament of Confirmation in St. Joseph's Church Ballinagar on Friday 6th March.

A reminder swimming is on twice this week-Tuesday 10th and Friday 13th.

Boys football match against Boher takes place on Thursday 12th at 3.30pm in Geashill.

Credit Union Quiz

Congratulations to our quiz teams who performed so well at the Tullamore Credit Union Quiz in The Court Hotel on Friday 13th February. Our Junior Team came third in their competition while the Senior Team came a brilliant first! Well done to all involved for their great achievement.
The Senior Team go on to the All-Ireland Final which takes place on Saturday 28th February at 11am in the Tullamore Court Hotel.

We presented over €200.00 to Shirley Feery in aid of the Supporting Shirley Fund. This money was raised in our raffle during the Bring and Buy sale at Christmas.

Junior Infants


We use instruments to make sounds! We had great fun!

Scríobh Leabhar

We wrote our Scríobh Leabhar on 'Bia' 'Eadaí' and 'Mé Féin'.

English and Art

We read the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. In Art,
we made the Three Little Pigs houses using lots of materials and pastels.

Look at our winter art.


We are very good at writing our sounds on the whiteboards.


We are very good at counting. This week we practised writing, counting and sorting objects into groups of 'three'.


We listened to the story, 'A friend like Ed'. We drew pictures of our friends.

3rd and 4th classes

The children are proud of their completed books as Ghaeilge.

The children enjoyed following a Maths trail about length.

In Science, we experimented with rollers when pushing heavy loads.

5th and 6th

5th and 6th classes have started tag rugby.

In History, we have been studying Native Americans. We wrote information reports on the topic and drew masks for Art.


The photographer will be coming to the school on Monday 26th January.

Catholic School Week

On Saturday 31st January the school choir will be singing at 7.30pm mass in Raheen to celebrate Catholic School Week.

Junior Infant Enrolment for September 2015

Parents who wish to enrol their child for September 2015 can contact the school in person or by phone to complete application forms on Friday 6th February.

Christmas 2014

Nativity Play

On Thursday 18th December the whole school took part in our annual Nativity Play in Raheen Church. In front of a large audience the children performed wonderfully.

Christmas Party

On Wednesday 17th December the Parents' Council organised the Christmas Party for all the children. Santa Claus was a very welcome visitor!

All classes have been very busy creating festive pieces of art.

Hallowe'en Fun!

Our Hallowe'en dress-up day was full of colour and fun! Over €100 was raised for our Parents' Council. Many thanks for your generosity. A big thank you to those parents and children who brought in some festive treats for us all to share! They were certainly appreciated by us all. Take a look at some photos from the day.

Raheen G.A.A.
Congratulations to the Raheen football team who were crowned Offaly Intermediate Champions on Saturday October 18th. We welcomed some of the team and officials into the school on Wednesday 22nd.
We wish them the very best of luck as they represent Offaly in the Leinster Intermediate Championship.

5th and 6th Classes.

We have been continuing to learn about Ancient Greece. We wrote recount stories about a day in the life of a citizen of Athens.

We have been getting into the Hallowe'en spirit. We painted silhouettes.

We also wrote poems based on Shakespeare's Witches' Song from Macbeth.

Mrs. Kearns' Class.

We planted a conker in a milk carton. We put it in a shady spot in our garden. we will wait for it to grow in the Spring.

We got dressed up for Hallowe'en. We made a Jack O'Lantern too.

3rd and 4th Classes.

We have been learning about Gandhi in History. We wrote recount stories telling about his life.

We wrote Irish stories about Oíche Shamhna.

We wrote Hallowe'en poems and we decorated our windows with spooky art!

1st and 2nd Classes.
We have been working hard learning about recount writing.

We have been busy for Hallowe'en too. Look at our lovely art work.

We also played some traditional Hallowe'en games.

Senior Infants.

In Maths we have been learning about shape.

In Art we made lovely hedgehogs.

In English we wrote recount stories.

For Hallowe'en we played some games. We especially enjoyed dunking for apples!

Junior Infants.

We have been very busy in Junior Infants.

We used marla to make our sounds.

We practised cutting along the lines.

We went on a nature walk to the Glebe Walk and collected some leaves. We used them to make hedgehogs.

We learned the Safe Cross Code.

We have created lots of lovely art work.

For Hallowe'en we made pumpkins. We also carved a pumpkin!

Football News
Well done to our boys' and girls' football teams who have completed their round of matches in Cumann na mBunscol competitions. They showed great determination in all their matches. A special mention for the girls who won three of their five matches and narrowly missed a place in the final. Thanks to all the parents who supported the teams and helped bring the boys and girls to the matches.

3rd & 4th Classes
During Fire Safety Week firemen visited our class. They spoke about fire safety in the home. The children really enjoyed seeing their special equipment.

We have been monitoring the weather over the last few weeks. We have enjoyed using the weather vane and the anemometer. The anemometer measures wind speed.

We have been composing music with percussion instruments to accompany the story of Hansel and Gretel.

The class have been learning about Pablo Picasso. We have tried to paint in his style.

In Drama we represented the story of the Wooden Horse of Troy in frozen pictures.

5th & 6th Classes

We have been learning about recount writing. We have written stories in this style.

In History we have studied Ancient Greece. We even learned about Greek architecture.
In Art we drew three styles of Greek columns.

In Science we have learned that sound travels in waves. We proved this in experiments!

We have enjoyed playing chess and learning the many rules.

September 2014

It's been a very busy start to the new year. A special welcome to all our new entrants.

We have all been working very hard in our classes.


We had a visit from the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Denis Nulty. We played our tin whistles for him.
