School News



Midterm Break

School will be closed from Monday 27th to Friday 31st October inclusive.

Hallowe'en Fun!

Our Hallowe'en dress-up day was full of colour and fun! Over €100 was raised for our Parents' Council. Many thanks for your generosity. A big thank you to those parents and children who brought in some festive treats for us all to share! They were certainly appreciated by us all. Take a look at some photos from the day.







Raheen G.A.A.

Congratulations to the Raheen football team who were crowned Offaly Intermediate Champions on Saturday October 18th. We welcomed some of the team and officials into the school on Wednesday 22nd.
We wish them the very best of luck as they represent Offaly in the Leinster Intermediate Championship.






5th and 6th Classes.

We have been continuing to learn about Ancient Greece. We wrote recount stories about a day in the life of a citizen of Athens.



We have been getting into the Hallowe'en spirit. We painted silhouettes.





We also wrote poems based on Shakespeare's Witches' Song from Macbeth.




Mrs. Kearns' Class.

We planted a conker in a milk carton. We put it in a shady spot in our garden. we will wait for it to grow in the Spring.


We got dressed up for Hallowe'en. We made a Jack O'Lantern too.

3rd and 4th Classes.

We have been learning about Gandhi in History. We wrote recount stories telling about his life.



We wrote Irish stories about Oíche Shamhna.



We wrote Hallowe'en poems and we decorated our windows with spooky art!



1st and 2nd Classes.

We have been working hard learning about recount writing.



We have been busy for Hallowe'en too. Look at our lovely art work.



We also played some traditional Hallowe'en games.




Senior Infants.

In Maths we have been learning about shape.



In Art we made lovely hedgehogs.



In English we wrote recount stories.



For Hallowe'en we played some games. We especially enjoyed dunking for apples!


Junior Infants.

We have been very busy in Junior Infants.

We used marla to make our sounds.



We practised cutting along the lines.



We went on a nature walk to the Glebe Walk and collected some leaves. We used them to make hedgehogs.



We learned the Safe Cross Code.



We have created lots of lovely art work.



For Hallowe'en we made pumpkins. We also carved a pumpkin!









Football News
Well done to our boys' and girls' football teams who have completed their round of matches in Cumann na mBunscol competitions. They showed great determination in all their matches. A special mention for the girls who won three of their five matches and narrowly missed a place in the final. Thanks to all the parents who supported the teams and helped bring the boys and girls to the matches.

3rd & 4th Classes
During Fire Safety Week firemen visited our class. They spoke about fire safety in the home. The children really enjoyed seeing their special equipment.



We have been monitoring the weather over the last few weeks. We have enjoyed using the weather vane and the anemometer. The anemometer measures wind speed.



We have been composing music with percussion instruments to accompany the story of Hansel and Gretel.



The class have been learning about Pablo Picasso. We have tried to paint in his style.



In Drama we represented the story of the Wooden Horse of Troy in frozen pictures.



5th & 6th Classes

We have been learning about recount writing. We have written stories in this style.



In History we have studied Ancient Greece. We even learned about Greek architecture.
In Art we drew three styles of Greek columns.



In Science we have learned that sound travels in waves. We proved this in experiments!



We have enjoyed playing chess and learning the many rules.






September 2014


It's been a very busy start to the new year. A special welcome to all our new entrants.

We have all been working very hard in our classes.

.


We had a visit from the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Denis Nulty. We played our tin whistles for him.


Around thirty children from 3rd to 6th classes took part in the Offaly Cross Country Athletics for Primary Schools. Well done to all for taking part and for representing the school so well. A special congratulations to Kevin Sweeney in 3rd class who came second in his race and won a silver medal

.





Attendance Awards
On Wednesday 25th June the best attenders were acknowledged at our school assembly. Each child was awarded a certificate to recognise this great achievement.







School Tours

The Junior classes went on their school tour to Glendeer Pet Farm near Athlone on Friday 20th June. The Senior classes visited Croke Park and experienced the Viking Splash Tour on Tuesday June 24th . All the children had a wonderful day.








Open Day
Our annual Open Day took place on Wednesday 18th of June in glorious sunshine. A large crowd of parents, grandparents, past and future pupils enjoyed watching all the classes perform a variety of dances, songs, music and poems. Examples of the children's work from throughout the year was also on display. There was extra reason to celebrate as we raised our fourth Green Flag. Afterwards refreshments were enjoyed by all thanks to our Parents' Council.

First Communion

Children from 2nd class received their First Holy Communion on Saturday 24th May in a lovely ceremony in Raheen Church. A big thank you to all the children who came to sing in the choir.



Mr. Hyland's Class

In English the children have been enjoying reading 'The Spirit of the Titanic'. They have done lots of work based on it.



Mrs. Hyland's Class

3rd and 4th classes have learned about bones and skeletons. They have also tested the strength of their muscles.

They have also experimented with magnets.











Junior Infants

In English we sequenced the story of 'The Hungry Caterpillar'.



In Art, we made a class display of 'The Hungry Caterpillar'.



We planted lettuce seeds with Mrs. Kearns.



In Maths we solved puzzles together.




National Walk to School Day

On Wednesday 14th May we took part in National Walk to School Day. Lots of us walked from the pitch or from our homes to school. Altogether 87 children walked to school on Wednesday. Thanks to everyone for taking part on Wednesday and for helping with all our walking this year.








Congratulations! We have been awarded our fourth Green Flag.


Confirmation

Congratulations to all the children from 6th class who celebrated their Confirmation on Friday 9th May. The children fom 2nd to 5th classes took part in the choir and performed brilliantly. A big thank you to all the parents who volunteered to drive the children to the church for the choir.



Junior Infants

In English we are doing the story 'Goldilocks and the three bears'. We made puppets in Art of Goldilocksand the three bears. We used them in dance Drama to role-play the story.



Irish Dancing

We did great on our first day. We learned our 1,2,3's and the circle dance.



P.E.

In football this week we learned the solo and hand pass.



Maths

We can make things using our shapes. Look at our designs!



Junior Infants

English- We can find the sentence to match the picture!



Drama- We performed our Nursery Rhymes. We drew pictures of our mime work.



Geography- We drew plans of our journey around Geashill.



Science- We made Spring bokks. We know that lambs, daffodils and claves are all signs of new life in Spring!



Playtime- We can match words and pictures. We made designs using our lego and blocks.



Junior Infants

In Art, we made Mothers Day Teapot Cards. we put a teabag inside for Mum to enjoy on Sunday.



In Music, we can sing the song Five Little Ducks. We have been learning about middle, high and low notes. We used instruments to shake and beat for the song 'Five Little Ducks'.



Maths

We are learning to partition. We can sort objects using two groups.



We can sort shapes. We have been learning all about circle, square, triangle and rectangle.



English

We are very good at our writing now. Look at our wonderful writing!



Geography

We have been drawing simple journeys on our way to and from school. We went out and about Geashill and made a journey to school, to the shop, to the Glebe walk and the Post Office.



Mrs Hyland's Class

In Art, the children made some Mothers Day Card they were quilling flowers and stuck them on. They also made some Mothers Day coupons.




The children have been very busy completing their 'Write a Book'.





Mrs. Hyland’s Class

In Science we have studied the effects of friction. Using a Newton meter and a brick we recorded the friction caused by different surfaces.



In Maths we have been looking at weight. We have estimated, measured and recorded the weight of many items around the classroom.



Miss. Cosgrove’s Class

We were busy making leprechauns for St. Patrick’s Day.



Look at these delicious tasty green buns that the boys made for their class.



Miss Walsh’s Class

In Art we made streamers for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and we made St. Patrick’s Mobiles.



Maths: Measures- We were seeing what is heavy and light. We did lots of weighing and measuring with balances and weighing scales.



World Book Day in our class: We read our favourite books. We made some bookmarks.

World Book Day 2014

World Book Day 2014 was a great success. The older children read to younger groups and all enjoyed reading and looking at books together. All children received a book token.




Credit Union Primary School Quiz 2014

Well done to our two teams who took part in the Tullamore Credit Union Quiz on Friday 28th February. Our junior team won in great style beating off stiff competition from twenty other schools. Congratulations to all the team for this great achievement. This is the second year in a row that the school has won this competition. The senior team also performed well finishing eighth. Thanks to all ten children for putting such a great effort into preparing for this quiz over the last six weeks.




Move On Mondays

Thanks to everyone who has joined us in our Move on Mondays. We will continue this until Easter holidays. That leaves four more Mondays up to and including Monday 7th of April. We will be sending our Green Flag renewal application form to An Taisce in the next week or so and should hopefully receive our fourth flag on 22nd of May in Athlone. Well done to all concerned, especially all on the Green School Committee.

Unit for Deaf Children Fundraising

Thanks to everyone who has collected money for the Vintage Run in aid of the Unit for the Deaf. So far over €1000 has been raised. We would like all remaining cards, filled or not, to be returned by this Friday 7th March. The returning of all cards was a condition set by the Fáile Vintage Club. A reminder that the vintage run itself takes place on Sunday 16th March. Anyone wishing to take part can register their vintage vehicle at 9:30 am at Seery's Bar in Daingean. Registration costs €20.



Unit for the Deaf

The children really enjoyed making some pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. They especially enjoyed eating them and trying out different toppings. Yum! Yum!



Junior Infants

Art

We have been busy making a Spring collage. We have been learning about new life in Spring! -calves, lambs, chicks and tadpoles.



History

We have been looking at our birth dates. We know the day, month and year we were born. Look at our birthday cakes with a candle for each year we have celebrated.



P.E.

In P.E. this week we learned some hockey skills. We can control the puc using hockey sticks. We had great fun!



Science/Geography

We went on a Nature walk. We were looking for signs of Spring around our village. We found daffodils, buds on the trees and nests in the trees.



We examined lots of materials around our classroom. We made groups of glass and plastic objects. Look at our work.



English

We are using our new words to make sentences. We are very good at our new words.



Unit for the Deaf

The children have been learning about weight in school. They recorded the weights on a graph.



In Maths the children are learning about place value-tens and units.




The children have been learning their letters and about full and empty. They are also learning to listen.

St. Valentine's Day

We all got into the spirit of St. Valentine's Day! Take a look at the pictures!







Miss Walsh's Class

In Drama we drew a picture to respond to the rhyme 'To market, to market'.



In S.P.H.E our theme this week was about being unique. We looked in the mirror and learned the song 'I look in the mirror and what do I see?'



In Maths the children were doing problem solving. They solved jigsaws together in groups. They were also completing some colour patterns.





In English we were using our sounds to write words.



Move On Mondays

On Monday 10th February we walked to school from the GAA pitch. A great number of parents and children joined in. This was part of our efforts to achieve our fourth green flag. We will be walking again on Monday 17th.

Parent questionnaires on school uniform were sent home on Monday 10th February. Please return on or before Friday 14th February.


Catholic School's Week

To celebrate Catholic School's Week the children took part in the Saturday evening Mass in the local Church. A big thank you to everyone who attended on the evening and to those who participated in any way.




Mr. Hyland's Class

In Science we have been learning about how sound travels and how we hear. We have been doing experiments to show that sound can travel through solids.



In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We made lots of different shapes and used them in Art to create some interesting designs.






Mrs Hyland's Class

2nd, 3rd and 4th classes have been looking at natural and manmade fabrics under the microscope.



In Art they have been weaving paper into striking patterns.



Miss Cosgrove's Class

In Science the children have been learning about static electricity.



In Maths first class have been sorting sticks into tens and units.



In Art the children made some lovely colourful jellyfish.

Green School Work - What is safe/unsafe?



P.E.-Gymnastics- We have been learning balancing techniques.




Art- We have made St. Brigid collages using fabric and fibre. We celebrated St. Brigid's Day on 1st of February.

Junior Infants

In Science the children are learning about things that fly. As a lesson the children made some paper aeroplanes.



In Maths the children have been learning number formation. They have also been sorting by colour and number.



Look at the wonderful 'Penguins' the children created for Art.




In Religion the children listened to the story of 'Jamie's Blanket'. The children had to draw a picture in response to this story.



'Humpty Dumpty' was their Nursery Rhyme of the week. The children made some Humpty Dumpty's through collage.




Mrs. Hyland's Class

Art- We enjoyed using charcoal to create winter woodland scenes.



Science- We tested different single span bridge designs in science to see which was the strongest.



Music- Our music compositions represented different kinds of shoes and the sounds they make.



Mr. Hyland's Class

In Maths Mr. Hyland's class have been learning about time. They had lots of fun playing time games on their tablets.



Also in Maths they have been studying 3-D shapes. They have made lots of cubes, cuboids, pyramids and much much more. They are going to construct some models using these shapes during Art class.



Tag Rugby has also begun for 4th, 5th and 6th classes.

In Art the children have produced some lovely pastel drawings of Space.




Christmas Party

On Friday 20th December the Parents' Council held a party for all the children. Everyone had a great time!






Nativity Play

On Thursday 19th December we had our Nativity Play. A big well done to all concerned for such a wonderful show.






Sale of Work

On Friday 13th December we had our Sale of Work. We raised a total of just over €500. This money will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Thanks to everyone who sent in items to be sold. Also a big thanks to the parents who sent in some lovely homemade cakes and biscuits. These went down a treat!!



Christmas is coming!!

Monasterevin History Group

On Thursday 12th December we had a visit from the Monasterevin History Group. Mr. Hyland's class have been studying the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. A parent from the school is a member of this group and volunteered to put on a re-inactment for the children with the help of his colleagues. The children enjoyed this and it really made Ireland of 100 years ago come to life.

The firemen visited Mrs. Hyland's class and spoke to the children about fire safety.





Miss Mooney

This week we are learning how to write all our letters on lots of different materials. We made playdough letters, letters in the sand and wrote our names on the whiteboards with markers.



During playtime we made tall buildings with wooden blocks. Caolan made a house that was taller than all the boys and girls in our class.





We read a wonderful book called 'The Rainbow Fish'. It taught us to share and be kind to our friends.

In P.E. we completed a tricky obstacle course. Look at us go!




Miss Cosgrove's Class

In Music the children have been studying Irish traditional music. Look at Miss Cosgrove and the children playing the banjo and bodhrán.

Junior Infants Story of the Week was 'We're Going On a Bear Hunt'. For Art they made some scary bears.



Miss Mooney class have also been sowing some wheat grass.

In Music the children have been learning about musical instruments.



Miss Cosgrove's Class

The children did some lovely pictures in class based on the artist Kandinsky's work.



For Music they made their own percussion instruments to use to accompany their songs.





Offaly County Council Calendar 2014

Well done to Clíona and Alix for having their pictures chosen for the 2014 Offaly County Council Calendar. We celebrated this at a special outdoor assembly.



Mrs Hyland's Class

In Geography the children were measuring wind speed and direction as well as temperature.




In Science they were learning all about how sound travels. They made their own string telephones.



Mr Hyland's Class

In History the children have been studying the Bronze Age. In Art they made Bronze Age jewellery and weapons using clay.




In Science they have been investigating how to separate mixtures. Using a method called Chromatography the children checked to see what inks were mixtures . Look at what they discovered.




Christmas Shoebox Appeal.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our Annual Christmas Shoebox appeal. We received over 60 boxes!




Hallowe'en Fun

Our Hallowe'en dress-up day was full of colour and fun! €143.00 was raised for the Parents' Council. Many thanks for your generosity. A big thank you to those parents who brought in some festive treats for the children and staff. They were appreciated by us all. Take a look at some photos from the day.







Every class got into the Hallowe'en spirit by writing scary stories and poems and by doing lots of fun art activities.



Some lucky children made toffee apples. The Infants even dunked for apples.



As well as all of this the older children were learning about spiders.




Pumpkins for Hallowe'en



Conall, Caoimhe and Eoghan brought some pumpkins to school. Their Grandad grew them in his garden. Some of Eoghan's and Caoimhe's class enjoyed making Jack O' Lanterns.



Girls' Football Final




A big "Well Done" to our Girls' Football Team who performed so well to reach the final in their competition following a wonderful victory against Daingean. The final against Tubber took place on Saturday 19th October in O'Brien Park, Tullamore. Unfortunately it wasn't our day as Tubber proved too strong. However Geashill played a very good game and we are all very proud of the girls. A big thanks to all the support on the day. Also thanks to the parents who helped bring children to matches over the last few weeks. Congratulations to Tubber who were very sporting and deserving winners.

A visit from Fr. Seán Dempsey

We recently had a visit from Fr. Seán Dempsey, a past pupil of Geashill School. He has been working for years in Africa. The children were really interested in his stories of life in Uganda. He also showed photographs of the villages in which he works.

Unit for the Deaf
National Tree Day

Thursday 10th October was National Tree Day. To celebrate this, Mrs. Kearns took Liam and Jakub out to explore some Native and non-native trees in the village. Below is a photo of a Hawthorn (native) and a Red Wood (non-native) tree. Liam and Jakub really enjoyed this lesson.



Children's Day of Prayer

Friday the 11th of October was Children's Day of Prayer. To celebrate this Bishop Denis Nulty spoke to the children in all the schools of his Diocese. Msgr. Coonan joined us to listen to Bishop Denis.



Girls' Football

The girls have won 2 matches so far this year. They will play Daingean next week in a crucial game. Good luck girls!

Mr Hyland's class

This week we have been learning about magnets. We made a magnet using electricity. It is called an electromagnet.



In History we are making Powerpoint presentations on Alexander the Great.


Junior Infants

This week we learned all about Owls. In Art we painted our owl friend. We flew our owl friends all around the class. We had a hooting good time!



For play and Drama we dressed up as some of our favourite fairytale characters.



Mrs. Hyland's class

In Science we experimented to see which materials were soluble. We also tested four types of sugar to see which dissolved the quickest.


We have been studying art by Ted Harrison, a Canadian artist who loves bright colours. We are painting pictures in his style.


Here are some paintings. They have an Inukshuk in them. This is a traditional Inuit symbol.



Green Schools

Mieke Scholte from An Taisce came to visit the school on Thursday 3rd October. This visit was regarding the quest for our Fourth Green Flag based on travel. Mieke met and discussed this topic with the Green School Committee.




Miss Cosgroves Class

In Drama Miss Cosgrove was pretending to be Leo the lion. The children were all cubs in the Jungle and they had to help Leo sort out problems that were happening.

In Maths the children are learning 2D shapes. They are made some 2D robots.



They also made some patterns with 2D shapes.


Look at Muireann matching finding some 2D shapes on the whiteboard.




The children made Mushroom Fairy Houses last week from clay. On Monday 7th October the children completed them. Have a look at their beautiful creations.



The children are learning about the colour wheel this week. Look at them experimenting with some colours.



Unit For the Deaf

In Art the the children Kate, Janine, Shone and Amy made some apples.



In Music Liam and Jakub are learning to play 'This Old Man' on their tin whistles.



The children enjoy using the Microsoft Surface Tablet as part of their lessons.



Kate has started knitting. She is going to knit a hair band. We look forward to see the finished piece!

Unit for the Deaf

The children went on their annual Autumn walk to the Glebe Walk. They collected acorns, conkers and leaves. They also picked some black and red berries. Jakub loves to eat the berries. Yum! Yum!

We have been following an Aboriginal theme in Art. The legend of 'The Great Flood' inspired our pointillism pictures and we drew Uluru or Ayer's Rock with pastels.

The children have been busy learning the sound 'S'. They made some swirly snakes for art.




At playtime the children had fun making new friends.



The children are also learning about 'Growing Up'. They brought in photos of when they were babies and how they look now.



Senior Infants and 1st class

The children in Miss Cosgrove's class have all been very busy at work. Look at their 'Busy Bees' display.

Liam and Jakub have been learning about the Respiratory System. Take a look at their breathing experiment.



Jakub really enjoys the story 'Five Little Ducks'. He took the pleasure in reading this story to the younger children in the class.
