School News
Our garden plants are growing!
We enjoy watching all our vegetables and herbs growing.
Unit for the Deaf
Mrs. Kearns' class made some rice krispie buns and are going to write about it using 'Photo Story'.
They also planted their peas in the school garden.
They are also watching the swallows that have nested above their door.
Junior and Senior Infants
Miss Kavanagh's class have been reading 'Where the Wild Things Are' this week. They enjoyed the book so much they drew their own wild things.
They have also been reading about 'Town Mouse and Country Mouse'.
Recently they made some lovely tile patterns.
1st and 2nd classes
Miss Walsh's class are very busy preparing for their First Communion on Saturday 25th May.
They also created some symmetrical art.
In Science they have been learning about floating and sinking.
5th and 6th classes
Mr Hyland's class have been learning about the 1916 Rising. They pretended to be rebel prisoners in Kilmainham Jail and wrote these letters to their families.
3rd and 4th classes
In Mrs. Hyland's class the children have been studying the parts of a flower. They went outside to photograph and draw some wild flowers on the school grounds.
They are also enjoying reading their novel 'Sparrow'.
Writing Surveys
Thanks to all who returned the questionnaires on writing. We appreciate you taking the time to fill them in. Your views are important to us.
3rd and 4th classes
The pupils have been looking at the crow family. The children have counted the numbers of rooks, jackdaws and magpies on the school grounds every day.
In P.E. the children really enjoyed playing mountains and valleys with the parachute. Competition was fierce!
5th and 6th Classes
Pupils in 5th and 6th have been busy designing and making models of planes. They will be finished in a couple of weeks. Take a look at what some of them look like now.
Cumann na mBunscol Final
Congratulations to the football team on their great performance beating Tubber on Wednesday 8th May. Well done to Tubber for a battling display.
Soccer
Some of the boys and girls from 5th & 6th classes took part in an FAI 5 a side football blitz in Tullamore on Thursday 2nd May. The boys progressed to play in the mid-Leinster final in Portlaoise.
Confirmation
Congratulations to all the children from 6th class who celebrated their Confirmation on Friday 26th April. The children fom 1st to 5th classes took part in the choir and performed brilliantly. A big thank you to all the parents who volunteered to drive the children to the church for the choir.

Planting in our school garden
All classes have been planting vegetables in the school garden. They planted cabbage, carrots, shallots, parsnips and some herbs. We look forward to seeing them grow!
3rd and 4th class Art and Science
Over the last few weeks 3rd and 4th class art has been on a flowery theme. Take a look at their lovely Spring Flowers and their examples of their still life drawings.
The children also have been testing the perfect conditions for the germination of cress seeds. This is an ongoing study.
In English they have written metaphor and simile poems about members of their family. Dads have been very popular!
1st & 2nd Class Art work
1st & 2nd classes have been using lots of fabric to make clothes for their models!. They had great fun designing.

6th Class Retreat for Confirmation.
6th Class children making their Confirmation were on a retreat day at Mount St Annes on Friday 19th. As you can see from the photograph they enjoyed their break!

5th and 6th class work
5th and 6th classes have been drawing pie charts to represent data in Maths.
They have also been learning about the history of flight. They have studied some pioneers of aviation such as The Wright Brothers, Alcock and Brown, Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.

Our vegetable plots
Our vegetable plots are ready for sowing. A big thank you to Pat Butler for organising this and donating all the materials to the school. We will post our progress during the next few weeks on the website.

1st & 2nd Classes planting seeds.
Now that Spring has finally arrived 1st and 2nd classes have been busy planting seeds. They sowed Cress, Basil and Peas.

3rd and 4th classes
The children's Science topic this week was on Melting. They wanted to see which item melted first. They used butter, chocolate, margarine and chocolate spread and the butter melted first.

5th and 6th classes
5th and 6th class were learning all about Chance and Probability in Maths. They had fun throwing dice and tossing coins and predicting the outcome.

Siobhán Phelan
A big well done to Siobhán Phelan (5th class) who came 3rd in the Irish Dancing World Championship held in Boston recently. We are all very proud of you Siobhán.
Easter

5th & 6th Classes School Work
Children from 5th & 6th classes have been doing lots of work on maps and plans. They have drawn plans of classroom, homes and village. See photos......
Community Games Handwriting Competition
Seán Flood, Stephen Hackett and Alison Sweeney represented Killeigh in the County final of the Handwriting Competition held in Ferbane on Thursday 21st March. They all did very well and Seán goes forward to represent Offaly in the National Finals in May.
Scriobh Leabhar Competition
Well done to all the children who took part in the Scriobh Leabhar competition for 2013. Awards were presented in Portlaoise on Thursday 14th March. The winners were: Siún McGrath, Conor Hennessy, Aishling Bolger, Eoghan Hyland, Katie Hennessy, Sinead Madden and Rebecca Sweeney.
Sports
Children from 5th & 6th classes recently took part in Football and Tag Rugby blitzes held in Tullamore. They played very well in both events. See photos...
Farewell Amala
Amala leaves us today to start school in Co. Mayo. We will all really miss her and we wish her all the best! Look at Amala in her beautiful dress.

3rd and 4th classes
3rd and 4th have been learning about electrical circuits. They made some circuit maths games for the Infants to play.
Second Class First Communion Preparations
Second Class children are busy preparing for their First Confession.
World Book Day 2013
World Book Day 2013 was a great success. The older children read to younger groups and all enjoyed reading and looking at books together. Many children got involved in the "swap a book" idea. Please remember that book tokens expire on March 24th. A visit to the new library over Easter is highly recommended.

Bare Soled Theatre Company
The Bare Soled Theatre company visited our school on Tuesday 5th March 2013. The children from 3rd to 6th classes took part in the play called "To bee or not to bee". The play is a fun way to help the children figure out the best way to go about minding the earth. The group are sponsored by The Department of Environment and Offaly County Council and Geashill school was selected to take part as part of our ongoing work in obtaining Green Flags for the school.
Great fun was had by all involved!

Visitor to our school
Lauren & Kayleigh Power brought their little dog, named Rusty into school on Friday afternoon for us all to see!

Carlow Cathedral Project
3rd to 6th classes have been working very hard to decorate a fish which will form part of a display in Carlow Cathedral. All catholic schools have been invited to take part in this project. Nicole Farrell and Sarah Behan's fish was chosen as Geashill School's display.

Credit Union Quiz 2013
A very big "well done" to both our teams who took part in the Tullamore Credit Union Quiz in Tullamore Court Hotel on Wednesday 6th Feb. The great news is our junior team came 1st in their competition and congratulations to Séan Flood, Stephen Hackett, Eoghan Hyland, Brian Walsh and Jennifer Hyland. The children were presented with a trophy on Wednesday 20th February at a special assembly in the school hall attended by children and parents a donation of €500 was also made to the school.
Best of luck to the Senior team who go forward to represent Tullamore Credit Union in the National Final in The Ardboyne Hotel, Navan on Saturday 2nd March 2013. Congratulations to Jade Grennan, Hannah O'Rourke, Shane O'Rourke, Rebecca Sweeney and Aoife Bonnie.
A lot of hard work and effort was undertaken by all the children, teachers and parents.

Visit to school by St Josephs's School, Tullamore
We were delighted to have a visit today from some children and their teachers from St Joseph's National School. Tullamore. The children performed a song called "The Penguin Song" which is about the travel theme we are working towards in obtaining our 4th Green Flag for the school.

Snow
The snow came back to Geashill on Tuesday 5th February. Eddie was hard at work!
4th Green Flag Workshop
The Green Schools Committee had a recent visit from Mieke Scholte the Green School Travel Officer with An Taisce. Lots of ideas and plans were discussed and we hope to start implementing some of their ideas in the near future.

Mouthguards now mandatory in Gaelic football.
Following the GAA’s Annual Congress in April 2012 a new rule was enacted that made it mandatory to use a mouthguard in all Gaelic football matches and training sessions from January 1st 2013 (for all age grades up to and including minor) and at U21 and Adult level from January 1st 2014.
