School News

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Thanks to all the children and parents who filed shoe boxes. We had a great response again this year.


In Drama, we have been acting out our nursery rhymes stories 'Miss Polly had a dolly' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

In Maths, we were learning about 2D shapes.

We made different shapes using the vertex balls and rods.

A reminder that the Parent Teacher Meetings take place on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th November. Times will be set out on Monday 12th.

5th and 6th classes

In Science, we have been learning about spiders. We want to examine them closely so we have set some traps on our school grounds to catch them. We will return them safely when we have finished looking at them.

We drew a plan of our school grounds and marked on it where our traps have been laid.

Junior Infants

In Music we had great fun learning about percussion instruments.

In Art, we made some scarecrows.

3rd and 4th classes

In Science we classified good and poor reflectors. We used periscope too.

In Maths we have been working with money. We made shopping lists from catalogues.

We made megalithis burial tombs in clay.

Building Works

Our extension is making great progress. It is almost ready for roofing.


Everyone got into the Hallowe'en spirit on Friday 23rd October. Look at all the wonderful costumes.

The staff looked better than usual!

All classes did lots of Hallowe'en work over the last week. Take a look.

Thanks to everyone who sent in such lovely buns and cakes. Thanks to all who donated to Temple St. Children's Hospital and the Corey Mulpeter fund. €140 was collected.

Presentation of Proclamation and Irish Flag by Defence Forces.

On Wednesday 21st October we were visited by Sgt. Derek McKevitt and Gunner Peter Scally from the 2nd Artillery Regiment in Athlone as well as Sgt. Seán Sweeney, parent, Board of Management member and representative of the Air Corps. They presented the school with our National Flag and a copy of the Easter Rising Proclamation. One of our pupils also read out part of the proclamation. Well done to the boys and girls for their interesting questions and the rousing rendition of Ámhrán na bhFiann. Thanks to the parents, grandparents and past pupils who attended to help us celebrate this occasion. Thanks also to the three members of the Defence Forces who carried out their duties so well.


On Thursday volunteers with the OSPCA visited every class reminding us how to look after our pets. We had a special visit from Minnie the dog and two lovely kittens. Thanks to all who donated pet food and money to the OSPCA. They were very impressed.

5th and 6th classes

In Maths we have been learning about gathering data and representing it on various types of graphs. We drew bar charts and trend graphs. We also created graphs on our tablets.

In Science we were learning about gravity and air resistance. We had fun carrying out an experiment to see which material made the best parachute. Our results showed a tissue paper parachute was best. However, none of us would use it to jump out of a plane!

In Art we painted our Bronze Age weapons and jewellery.


The children in Cairdeas made a beautiful Autumn display.

5th and 6th classes

In History the children have been learning about the Bronze Age . For Art they made jewellery, tools and weapons from clay.

3rd and 4th classes

In Science, the children have been dissolving different substances in water.We found the saturation point of a solution. We dissolved different types of sugar in hot and cold water.

In Art we made some leaf prints.

In Maths we drew different types of graphs.

1st class

In Science, we made some butter. After making it we got to sample it on some crackers. Yum! Yum!

Senior Infant and 2nd classes

In Maths, we have completed a graph displaying the results of a survey. The survey involved us asking questions to the children in the school about their favourite subjects, colours and pets.

Junior Infants

Junior Infants went to explore our local area in the Glebe Walk.

In Art, we made some hedgehogs using leaves.

Look at how good we are at cutting.


24 children from 3rd to 6th classes took part in the Offaly Primary Schools Cross Country Competition on Thursday 1st October. Well done to all for taking part. A special mention to our Bronze medal winner.

Tullamore to Calais Project

Geashill School, along with most other Offaly primary schools, is supporting the Tullamore to Calais project as our response to the refugee crisis developing in Europe. Children have brought in Hygiene Packs which will be shipped to Calais along with other supplies. We really appreciate your support for this most worthy cause.

Our four classroom extension is progressing well. Everyday there is something new to look at.

5th and 6th Classes

In History we have been learning about archaeology. Mr. Conneely, a former archaeologist brought in some artefacts to show the class.
